Freedom has always been something that the country has pushed at us. Whether is is freedom of speech, religion, sexuality, assembly, and simply expression. Books are expression from geniuses who feel that their “crazy” or “inappropriate” creativity needs to be shared through text. The word ‘banning’ is associated with the words inappropriate, graphic, and uncomfortable, but is it really that they are all of those things or is it something the public fears. Banning books is distributors ways of hiding or protecting innocent minds from the truth or from explicit topics. Books are banned all around the world, but the most common place is in schools. High School students hear and talk about more explicit things than any book could ever teach them, so how is banning books keeping their minds innocent? Books and other explicit things in are banned and censored because people are too afraid to accept it, or are too disturbed by the reality of it, but if something that could teach valuable lessons if banned, who teaches those valuable lessons?

Book banning became prominent in the 399 B.C. During that time situations were handled differently because, “Socrates, [was] sentenced to drink poison in 399 BC for his corruption of youth”(Newth). Socrates was the first known author to have a piece of literature banned, and in this case he was sentenced to death. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was one famous instance of book banning. It was titled with the phrase “trash and suitable only for the slums”(http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/censorship/bannedbooksthatshapedamerica) There are many books that have been banned like, Gone with the Wind, Catch-22, Farenheight 451, The Great Gatsby, and the list continues. Books banning is a popular thing, but reading new things means knowledge, and knowledge means understanding how the world
