Individuals sometimes need to make a mistake or take a chance to really know what they want, and how they are going to achieve what will make them content in life. In the expert from Home Place by Guy Vanderhaeghe, the character Ronald seeks to achieve happiness when by marrying Darlene and having a life of his own. When marrying her, Ronald is given land to farm and his own place to live, but this does not fully delight him. Ronald has accommodated his happiness for Darlene but has left the comforts of home and started a life that is filled with unknown possibilities. But changing my mind and looking at different options allowed me to gain many experiences and know what I truly wanted to do because I was able to try things that were wrong for me. Like Ronald in the excerpt, I have had to make mistakes and stumble to know what I truly wanted. In the last year, I went back and forth between becoming a nurse or pursuing a career as a pharmacist. Usually, I changed my mind because I doubted my abilities and what I really can accomplish, but I was not content with the unknown of being indecisive. I chose to take the chance and pursue a career as a pharmacist since the possibility of the career excites me and I believe it would allow me to be satisfied with my life. I am used to change and new possibilities, becoming a pharmacist means a life of continuously learning; I know I need career where there is always change or something new. I had to make the choice for myself and not let the criticism of other change my mind, like Ronald whose father believed he was seeking happiness for the wrong reasons.
