A quote widely attributed to his name is “God is dead”, originating from his 1882 collection The Gay Science. In his parable ‘Madman’, Nietzsche states: “God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers?” This parable speaks of how the sun, representing God, is dead; however, the atheists are perfectly content with this. The madman, representing Nietzsche, argues that the village they are so content to live in was built on theist moral principles. This represents the fact that society is deeply rooted in Christian morality, whether one is a theist or not. While the atheists believe that their physical and moral foundation is stable, the madman recognizes that without the sun, they are alone in infinite darkness.
