Animal experimentation is an important necessity for the science community, but because it is a controversial topic, there are many who believe that it shouldn’t be continued. At the same time, there is also a group who have deemed it a necessity in the advancement in medicine. Throughout the history of mankind, there have been a great number of breakthroughs that have saved many lives; in most cases, it was an animal that had to have been tested on first. Even though, animal experimentation was used excessively in the past and contributed much to science, this type of practice should begin to advance in its methods. In the end of the claim that animals should not be used in experiments is more valid then the opposing argument against it. Despite all the knowledge that is gained from animals in research, the actual effects that are being caused because of the drugs and tests are alarming and should be taken more seriously. A few examples of what is done to animals inside laboratories “can include everything from testing new drugs to infecting with diseases, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skin, causing brain damage, implanting electrodes into the brain, maiming, blinding, and other painful and invasive procedures.” (“Animals in Research”) Animal experimentation isn’t pretty and it shouldn’t continue. When non-human subjects are used for medicine, studies show that there have been more failures rather than this supposed “progress.” Since some animals have similar DNA to us, researchers believe that the same affects that would work equally on humans too but they weren’t all correct, “the food and drug administration (FDA) has noted that 92 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trails.” (“Animal Testing Is Bad Science: Point/Counterpoint”) Human life is extremely important which is why it is understandable, why cures and pharmaceuticals are created. Without animal experimentation, many of the clinical trials that are done humans would end horribly since these products tested weren’t tested first on something else, who could’ve prevented tragic scenarios where human lives are cost. Testing on animals who never wanted it to be tested on and giving them diseases that they never had in the first place before scientists had gotten their hands on them, is cruel and would even go against many of the laws and acts created just for them. A widely known organization that is a lead activist against the use of animals in laboratories is PETA. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), “focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in the food industry, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry.” (“Our Mission Statement”) Animal experimentation is a major issue for PETA, that they would like to end, they have lead many campaigns on this and have pledged to help prevent animal suffering.
