“Over the past 10 years, more than 20,000 American children are believed to have been killed in their own homes by family members.” As a whole, our country loses almost five children to abuse and neglect daily, but in Maine, news about abuse and neglect rarely hit the front page. On the contrary, it is not that there is a lack of the occurrence. So I was surprised to hear that 10-year-old Marissa Kennedy was murdered by her mother and stepfather after months of abuse near my hometown.
