The appeal of emotion, otherwise known as pathos, is used to connect with the audience in a more emotional level and is used to capitalize on specific events that the author is trying to speak about. Pathos can be used on any emotion, and is often used to make things relatable with the audience so they feel a certain pull towards the subject being talked about. Although pathos is powerful and important when it comes to rhetoric, it can be misused, which is suggested by Kendra Gayle Lee, Jessica McKee, and Megan McIntyre (2012), authors of the Writing Commons book, Pathos, “Relying too much on pathos, though, can make your writing sound like an after-school special.” (Lee, McKee & McIntyre, 2012)

With this, he is able to not only thank the ones who are actively against the terrorist organizations, but also instill a feeling of security among the people of the US. In addition to the aforementioned, Obama also references the great strides these government agencies have accomplished, which also helps the people feel better about their security and have pride within the people they are being protected by. Not to mention that Obama insists that the US did not want this war, but they war came to them with the addition of, “The American people did not choose this fight. It came to our shores, and started with the senseless slaughter of our citizens.” (Obama, 2011). Obama uses this to incite the anger and sadness the people felt after the events of 9/11, also reminding them of the justification used by the government to actually go to with al Qaeda and other terrorist
