The men worked, while the women stayed home and cleaned the house, maybe do some crafting such as knitting or sewing, and watched after the children.…

Workshops grew in size and tasks were subdivided into less skilled segments of work. “The time spent in a factory,” explained a Massachusetts observer “will produce ten times as much as it will in household manufactures” (Clark, 2008, p. 348). Throughout the colonial era, most colonists came to America with the desire to partake of a new and better lifestyle, practice their preferred religion freely and openly, and ultimately gain more opportunity. However, they brought with them their old traditional beliefs regarding male and female roles. Although women played a significant part during the 17th century, the colonial societies were clearly defined as male-dominant and women as being inferior to men. Only men could be elected as community leaders, ministers and clergymen while women, in contrast, were not only forbidden to operate in leadership roles, but also were not allowed to vote, buy or sell land, sue or be sued in a court of law, hold office, preach, attend school, or own property (Tindall et al. 71). Most colonial women took on roles as homemakers who cooked meals and made clothing and domestic goods to use and sell.…

In the article, Appetite, Laurie Lee explained how humans take things for granted sometimes and she suggested that they need to get away from those things sometimes. She listed examples of things different than food such as people that we surround ourselves with and how we needed to get away from them too sometimes because that could lead to them getting too attached or they could get tired of each other. In the article she says, “So I think we should arrange to give up our pleasures regularly--our food, our friends, our lovers…” Lee was saying that we should not be surrounded with our usual surrounding because she said that humans should preserve the relationship while it still existed. She said that she wants humans to still have the same feeling when they are reunited with that person or the food. When she was referring she was saying that humans should not eat the same exact food night after night or get too used to it.…
