Later in the story she says that the man who the terrorist attacked was her father. Is in this moment when she says the reason about why she decided to investigate about this person and his family. The reason why Blumenfeld started to investigate about the man who attacked her father was because, as she states in the essay, "I had resolved to find a way to make my father human in the gunman's eye." (846). This is linked with the theme of family because she wants that the gunman recognize her father as a human being. This demonstrate that she cares about her father, and also this demonstrate that she doesn’t want her family to be slighted or underestimated. Another part in the essay where we can see it related to the theme of family is in the way that the family of Omar Kamel Al Khatib, the terrorist, always kept supporting him. An example of this can be seen at the beginning of the essay, when Blumenfeld visits his family. Here Blumenfeld asks what happened to Omar, why he shot a man, Blumenfeld’s father. During this talk Omar’s family demonstrate that they support Omar, and that they think that Omar had his reasons to do it. Another example of Omar’s family support is when he applied for a parole.
