The Anti-Prostitution In The United States

The anti-prostitution pledge was supposed to be a thing of the past when President Obama issued an executive order, in one of his first acts as President, to reverse that rule. However, it was only a facade because his administration actually defended the anti-prostitution pledge in federal courts, including the Supreme Court! With all that said, there is a bright side to this story and the anti-prostitution pledge was eventually overturned because the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that it was unconstitutional.
In an indirect manner, the D.C. Madam brought this somewhat obscure issue into the light of day. Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) was the next big name to drop as one of the D.C. Madam’s clients. With this information available to the public, Jeanette Maier, “the Canal Street Madam” from New Orleans who was targeted by the FBI, was all too happy to publicly allege that this “family values” candidate had frequented her brothel as well. In fact, plenty of other powerful locals did so too. “It’s the people running our country who visited our house -- mayors who did drugs and Republicans in pantyhose,” said Maier. Luckily for Vitter he wasn’t prosecuted in his home state of

In fairness to the Republican Party, some of the most notable political prostitution scandals have involved renowned Democrats. Many people reveled in the fall from grace of former Rep. Wayne Hays (D-OH), one of the most powerful Congressmen at the time. Hays, “the Archie Bunker of Capitol Hill,” had a hardnosed reputation for abusing his power. Ultimately, he resigned in 1976 after it surfaced that for two years his mistress had been employed as his secretary all at the taxpayer’s expense. Her only real responsibilities were sexual. His mistress, Elizabeth Ray, told reporters, “I can’t type. I can’t file. I can’t even answer the

In the end, the House Committee on Ethics concluded that he committed a number of violations but couldn’t prove that he was aware of the extent of Gobie’s escort business. There are several more examples of these types of scandals, but only one these politicians had publicly supported the decriminalization of prostitution before their scandal occurred; it was Barney Frank. Barney Frank was a Massachusetts State Representative in 1975 when he introduced legislation that would have officially recognized the “Combat Zone” district of Boston as an adult entertainment district, thereby making it a de facto red-light district with decriminalized prostitution. Barney Frank’s bill ultimately didn’t get passed even though it was at the behest of the Boston Police Commissioner at that…

Presidential Passions was a very stimulating read that kept one glued page after page. The details, especially that of President Kennedy, are extremely scandalous and worth reading to learn about the past presidents that led the nation, and how their intimate lives affected the course of the U.S. as well. From an epic womanizer to a man attached to his first love, each president mentioned in the book are remarkably different in their own way of running the country, as well as loving a woman or women. Radical feminists argue that prostitution is not a conscious and calculated choice most of the time. They believe that most individuals who become prostitutes are forced or persuaded by a pimp or by human trafficking. If it is an independent decision, then it is due to personal issues, like poverty, lack of opportunity, or underlying problems, like drug addiction, child sexual abuse and other factors.…

Beth Bailey’s work Sex in the Heartland goes into a deep analysis of sexual revolution throughout America in the 1960s. Using Lawrence, Kansas as a representation of the rest of the country, Bailey argues that the sexual revolution emerged from both sexual and non-sexual changes during the Second World War, and continued to grow as repressive elites attempted to halt the growth of sexual culture through Kansas University administration, the distribution of an oral contraception for unmarried women, and oppression of local press and on and off-campus liberation movements. All these events and organizations eventually lead to the freedom and equality of sexual culture, but not before going through multiple protests, court cases, and other acts…

When people study history they rarely learn about the sexual history of the United States; and, how it evolved from courting and brothels to dating and prostitution. Love for Sale takes place in New York City, NY, from 1900 to 1945, it journeys through the major events that occurred in the U.S., World War I, Great Depression, and World War II. The author, Elizabeth Alice Clement, is an assistant professor of history at the University of Utah. The central argument of Love for Sale is, “Profoundly shaped by women’s economic inequality and insecurities, all three practices-courtship, treating, and prostitution-reflected the negotiations in which women and men engaged over the economic and social value of sex.” Clement’s purpose is to help the readers understand the transformations courting, treating, and prostitution had in 1900-1945 in New York City.…

The moral reform movement was a collective effort by ill-equipped parents, “settlement workers and vice reformers joined with club leaders, probation officers, social workers, and sex educators” to combat the scourge of prostitution and to bring under control the newly sexualized population of young working women in the 1900’s (Alexander, 1995, p. 41). Once the young women got a taste of freedom, they “profess utter lack of respect for their parents and contempt for their home life” and “habitually have immoral relations with boys and men without expecting or accepting financial reward or gain” though “some of them are already willing and anxious to begin a life of professional immorality” (Alexander, 1995, p. 40). Prior to this new sexualization…
