If such an attack is going to happen disallowing immigrants into this country is not going to stop this. Some policies that came out of 9/11 focus on legalization (Phillips, 2002). They believe that legalization will “Improve national security” (Phillips, 2002). The larger issue with immigration faces to issue of civil and human rights and providing all people within America with those rights (Phillips, 2002). The more recent immigration issues have focused on Mexican Americans and their illegal immigration into the United States (Fox, 2014). Currently in places such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles people of color are now the majority group (Phillips, 2002). There is a high number of illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States and that is mostly what the anti-immigration protests have been targeting (Fox, 2014). They have tried to set them apart from their illegal counterparts. They are different than illegal immigrants. They took the time to fill out the paperwork and wait to get into America whereas illegal immigrants came into the country for various reasons without the necessary paperwork to be here (Phillips, 2002). However, the media portrays illegal immigrants as “drug dealers, criminals, and …welfare cheats” (Phillips, 2002). As with many stereotypes this may be true for some illegal immigrants, but most likely does not hold true for every illegal immigrant in America. Immigration remains a social justice issue as many immigrants are not given the same opportunities in America. They do not have access to the education, jobs, housing, and standard of living that so many Americans take for granted. America is a land of diversity and in the 21st century we are still not a place where diversity is celebrated and social justice will not be gained unless immigrants are treated equally and their human rights have been
