Between 1890 and 1913, the United States worked under what was called Imperialism-when stronger nations attempt to create empires by dominating weaker nations, economically, politically, culturally, or military. In the United States, there were people who did not agree with this and there were people who did. The people who disagreed with were called anti-imperialist. An early use of the term "anti-imperialist" occurred after the United States entered the Spanish–American War in 1898. The Anti-Imperialist League was founded on June 15, 1898 in Boston, in opposition of the acquisition of the Philippines, which happened anyway. Most times, both imperialist and anti-imperialist agree on what needs to be done but often disagree on the method to accomplish it.
The best American imperialist business, however, before 1898 was Hawaii. Hawaii had Pineapples and Sugar which were grown on American owned plantations by Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, and Native Workers. Treaties between the US and Hawaiian government workers exempted these sugars from tariffs and America has already established a Naval base at Pearl Harbor. In 1898, Hawaii was annexed, and in 1959, it became a State.
What led to the Spanish-American war was that Native Cuban were revolting against Spain, which was holding on to them as the remnant of their once great empire. The number of Cubans who died from disease and malnutrition after Spain’s General Valeriano Weyler put them into concentration camps were 95,000.…
