The Fearless Actions of One

The Anthem is a book that describes the reality and truths of many people’s lives in this world. Equality 7-2521 was born into a society that eliminates completely individuality and uniqueness of a person. The people in that society are taken away from their parents and placed in a “Home of the Infants” and move to the “Home of the Students” at the age of five. During Equality’s school years, his teachers disliked him for being “too smart” and the authorities berated him for being taller than most of the boys his age. At the age of fifteen the boys are sent to the Council of Vocation to be assigned their task for the remainder of their lives. Equality always dreamed of being accepted into the Home of the Scholars

But instead, Equality 7-2521 was sent to the Home of the Street Sweepers where four years later he found a tunnel and starts spending time there. During his time in the tunnel he invents a light box that creates electricity (wasn’t “invented” yet), and starts to write in a journal. His fearless mind and actions leads him to meet the “Golden One” while she was working in the fields and there is an instant attraction between them. The don’t talk at first just signal at each other but then it leads up to talking and flirting which was completely forbidden for no one can have any interaction with the opposite sex. Equality was sent to the Palace of Corrective Detention when he stays out late in the tunnel, but ends up escaping due to lack of guards and safe prison cells and takes his box of light to the Home of Scholars. The Home of Scholars rejected his invention because of his disobedience and crimes against the laws and rules and they were to dispose of it. Equality leaves out to the Uncharted Forest with a pursue of a new life. The Golden One finds him and they plan for their …show more content…
Public execution was a rare occurrence in the society and is only done when the unspeakable word is said. When Equality was only a little kid at the age of 10 years old, he witnessed a man being burned at a stake and was shocked by the face of joy on the man’s face (Rand 49-51). The existence and purpose of laws are to simply control the people in the society with fear and dread of what may happen if the rules aren’t obeyed. Equality’s future society would not have cruel punishments for a small crime that hides the truth of the history of humans. Equality’s society would provide its people with lots of freedoms and be able to think and say what they desire. Punishments like executions would not exist but imprisonments would be acted upon when the laws are broken. Equality would re-establish the idea of democracy and advocate justice and liberty. By being forbidden to speak or think a certain way and be punished and even executed is unbelievable and would not be set as a rule or law in Equality’s envisioned society.
In conclusion, Equality’s envisioned goals for his new society are mutually influenced by the laws of his former society. This is because Equality can see and identify what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening to him and do a better of a job from the start. Without all of his experiences from his former
