To begin, the author of the story To Kill A Mockingbird expresses her theme of “coming of age” through many ways. These ways include the development of the characters, symbols used, imagery, tone and motifs. Despite the fact, that she presents numerous themes, such as racism, and social class in the South, it is the coming of age theme that is most apparent in two characters Jem and Scout. As these characters are under the control of their principled father, Jem and Scout have to encounter events that test their beliefs, faith in father’s teachings and to understand the nature of human actions/behavior.…

When you are posed with the question if human beings are inherently good or bad, you often find yourself floundered to find an answer. It is a fundamental question with no definite answer, only your conception of situations and human beings. People often look for the bad in the world, they point out the negative things instead of the positive because that’s what people want to hear about. The positive things are overlooked, which concludes with people believing that humans are inherently bad. Unfortunately, they do not recognize the many positive actions of others.…
“In all our lives, there is a fall from innocence. A time after which, we are never the same” Gordie LaChance. The more we scrutinize the actuality of the circumstances that surround us, one comes to realize that we are brimming with innocent points of view, understandings, and thoughts.…
After reading the essays “The Myth of the Ant Queen”, “Project Classroom Makeover”, and “The Naked Citadel” by Steven Johnson, Cathy Davidson, and Susan Faludi, readers may have spotted that collective knowledge, different systems of organization, and the three terms identity, conformity and group mentality, are mentioned in their respective essays. Interestingly enough, these three completely different essays still have ideas that can work together to address a point: collective knowledge can greatly impact how effective multiple systems of organization can be in influencing an individual’s identity. After all, collaboration with others who have different knowledge and perspectives creates a sturdier foundation for a system of organization…
The Ants, a short story written in 1986, shows similarities to another document: The First History of Brazil from 1587. Additionally, the story also shows similarities to Jungian psychology with regard to the dwarf. The ants in the short story are rebuilding the dwarf skeleton, which can be read as the girls’ fear of exploring their own unconsciousness and inner beings. At the beginning of the story, The Ants, there are two young girls who find a dwarf skeleton that had been hidden by an old tenant.…
Reading “Black Ants and Buddhists” has made me realize that I am very fortune to have all the things that I have. I am able to identify with the teacher in chapter 2 because when I was growing up I didn’t always have all the things that I wanted, but my parents did everything for my sisters and me in order to have a great childhood. In chapter 11 it talks about the teacher visiting her student’s families and I am able to relate to that. When I was in 5th grade I was placed for the first time in a generalist classroom, that year I had a hard time understanding the English language and my mom was not able to help me with my school assignment. My teacher notice that I needed help so she decided to come to my house and talk to my mom.…
Humanworld It was a blistering hot summer day, but the Orca family was filled with anticipation. Several months earlier, Mr. Shamu Orca had desperately wanted to ensure that his son, Shamu Jr.’s, fifth birthday would be extra special, so he planned a vacation to the new and largely celebrated amusement park called Humanworld, located about one-thousand miles from their home. After hearing this fabulous news, Shamu Jr. jumped for joy, but Sharon, Shamu’s wife, was rather frustrated. “I can’t believe you would do something like this without asking me first,” snappped Sharon. “Don’t pretend to be doing this for Shamu Jr., I know how much you want to go to Humanworld.…
The human nature of people is very complex, however it has virtually stayed the same throughout time. In Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills like White Elephants” the reader is given a raw example of human nature and the inner struggles one faces as they are made to decide what path of life to take through his use of different literary devices. The first point of interest in “Hills Like White Elephants” is the “hills across the valley of the Ebro” (p 294). The hills were “long and white” (p 294), unlike the countryside that is “brown and dry” (p 295).…
Hunt for the Wilderpeople Film Taika Waititi ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ is about a young troubled adolescent boy, named Ricky. After years of being thrown around countless foster homes at the age of 13 years old, Ricky feels he has found himself a stable family environment. But with a disturbance in the family and his backyard being hundreds of miles worth of native bush, troubles arise and he finds himself running from authorities, as they are on a manhunt after suspecting Ricky has been kidnapped. Two main themes which stood out to me as a Maori viewer living between my two parents homes were how stereotypical barriers create an image for people in today’s society and how ‘family’ influence a child’s development growing up. I felt close to Ricky as he is the perfect portrayal of a young Maori boy..…
This theory is used to compare the life of Mandela’s and how it influenced the development of his personality. Maslow suggested that human behavior is driven by the hierarchy of five inborn needs (Schultz & Schultz, 2013). It consisted of five levels which start with the lowest level that is physiological or survival needs then move on to safety or security needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem needs and lastly, the self-actualization needs (Poduska, 1992). The lower needs are considered as essential needs while the higher needs are considered as non-essential as it would not lead to distress if they are not satisfied. The lower needs are known to Maslow as the deficit needs as their non-fulfilment would lead to a deficit in a person while the higher needs are known as growth or being needs as the satisfaction of those needs would bring positive emotions (Schultz & Schultz, 2013).…
The question “what does it mean to be human?” is a very well-known one that’s been asked time and time again. Being human consists of being a part of culture, the necessity to socialize and its effects, and the mental capabilities they can utilize. Being human is a distinct separation between humans and animals and is summarized with the three main social sciences. In regards to anthropology, every human is human because they are affected by a culture that no other animals have in common with the human race.…
Each individual has a different understanding of what the word “bad” or “evil” mean. If one person believes that stealing is bad, another person might believe that stealing is a good thing if it serves the greater good, for example, Robin Hood. The words “bad” and “good” are subjective and can vary in people’s views. Yet, by looking at the world today, it is difficult to say that humans are naturally good. However, when a child is brought into this world, one tends to associate them with purity and innocence.…
