Carlie Fleming Mrs. Stanley English 12 27 October 2016 An Anesthesiologist Anesthesiologists are physicians who administer and determine what type of anesthetic treatment is to be used for the patient prior to surgery, as well as positioning the patient on the operating table in a manner that will be helpful to the surgery. Following strict medical guidelines, the anesthesiologist takes into account the patient’s current health, any medications they are taking, and the type of surgery that is being performed. While the surgery is taking place, the anesthesiologist monitors the patient’s critical life functions to make sure no complications arise. After the surgery is over, the patient’s well-being has to be monitored as the anesthetic wears…
Work in a medical office can occasionally involve behavior that maybe conflicting to your personal ethics. You must not abuse the patient’s legal right to privacy. The medical assistant always puts the patient first if not that is considered unethical. Medical Assistants face ethical problems on a daily basis, in spite of where ethical beliefs are impacted by these factors, culture, religion, background, and individual values and beliefs. These factors form our ethical views and influence ethical decisions that affect medical assistants and their patients.…
County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago’s Public Hospital by a Chicago based physician and health activist David A. Ansell is a very inspirational book because it covers 30 years of Cook County Hospital’s history, beginning in the late 1970s till 2002. Cook County Hospital is an urban public hospital in Chicago that admits patients who are uninsured. Time, space, communication, and identity are portrayed throughout the book. These four factors are important in inter-ethnic relationships between patients and health care providers. Being able to identify these factors in a clinical setting, health care providers can provide more efficient care for all patients.…
Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by American journalist Sheri Fink is a very inspirational book because it focused on the events that happened in Memorial Medical Center when the hospital was flooded and had no electricity after Hurricane Katrina struck the city. Time, space, communication, and identity are portrayed throughout the book. These four factors are important in inter-ethnic relationships between patients and health care providers. Being able to identify these factors in a clinical setting, health care providers can provide more efficient care for all patients.…
Doctors are sometimes perceived as miracle-workers that perform the unimaginable. They hold a difficult, strenuous, but powerful position in our society. They make decisions on how to perform surgeries, what treatments to continue, and inevitably save lives on a daily basis. With all this control over patients, you wonder whether their own opinions on morality is an input into their decision making.…
At clinical I experienced a situation which reminded me of an ethical concern in which poor communication existed among health care professionals. One of the other student nurses in my group told me that her nurses was not listening to what she was saying. The student nurse informed me she told the nurse that the patient’s pulse ox was 82 and the nurse did not address the concern. She said the nurse was looking at her, but started talking to the doctor who just walked in the room. A couple minutes later the nurse asked the student if she took the pulse ox.…
The HeLa incident at John Hopkins Medical Institute in the 1950’s highlighted the importance of informed consent in the medical field, it provides a strong example for the ethical and legal repercussions for disobeying the process and violating a patient’s unalienable human rights, and furthermore reinforces its need. Informed consent is the undeniable prerequisite for a patient to be fully informed of a procedure and all of its aspects. This process is a necessary and pragmatic approach to maintaining a positive relationship between a physician and their patient; a necessity in ensuring human autonomy and the preservation of human rights. Informed consent was originally devised by the United Nations Committee in the Nuremberg Code to prevent future atrocities such as the Holocaust and Nazi experimentation on the Jews. The code is a set of ethics principles for researchers and physicians, it is aimed at ensuring that doctors do not take advantage of patients.…
Informed consent for surgery is significant in order to avoid allegations of battery and assault and other possible legal accusations. The surgeon performing the surgery obtains the patient’s informed consent. A specific communication between the surgeon and the patient regarding the surgery is necessary in order for the patient to make a knowledgeable decision. The specific communication includes a complete and brief explanation of the surgery, names of individuals performing and assisting in the surgery, possible complications, alternative therapies, risks of doing nothing, and likely outcomes. The surgeon advises the patient his or her right to refuse the surgery.…
The Nurse Practice Act (NPA) determines scope along with other state specific provisions. Nursing care varies from state-to-state and certain may impose certain regulation on nurses and their licenses (ANA, 2013). The NPA is intentionally written broadly, which helps in prevention of limitation of a nurse’s scope of practice. If there were lists of skills deemed within the scope for RNs and LPNs there would be no room for growth, as the practice of nursing changes so rapidly (Garrett, 2016). Additionally the NPA keeps the scope broad to prevent becoming outdated.…
Autonomy and Ethical Principles of Care Gunnar Kupfer Grand Canyon University HLT-305 October 16th 2016 Ethics in health care could be life or death. Patients have a lot of rights when it comes to health care, yet patients don’t even know what they are. Basic consent forms truly don’t adequately inform patients of their rights. Consent forms are written in high levels and use words most wont understand. The average person simply cannot read a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy consent form.…
Anesthesiology is my specialty of choice for residency training and it is clear that it has chosen me as well. During my anesthesia rotations, I realized how much I enjoyed perioperative medicine and bringing comfort to patients undergoing surgery. Implementation of treatment plans that improve the wellbeing of surgery teams and patients is a part of me. This field has a broad scope which offers consistent challenges and intellectual stimulation. Each patient has their own personal needs and present unique challenges, either physically or intellectually.…
Consent: every doctor and future doctor should know the importance of taking a consent from the patients for each step in the treatment process, also the doctors should know the consequences of performing any procedure or giving medications without taking a consent from the patient, if so the doctor could be sued for medical battery, but if the patient was unable to give a consent and his/her condition was life threatening here the doctor will do everything to save the patient’s life, and the patient can’t sue the doctor for medical battery. In addition, the doctor should respect the autonomy of the patient and not force the patient to take any decision. Confidentiality: it means that the doctor respects and keeps the privacy of the patient,…
There are several actions that nurses could take to fulfill the social contract of nursing and to prevent similar disparities from occurring today. The first action would be to advocate for the patient and make sure the patient understands what the consent is even after he or she signed it. If there are any concerns, the nurse will request for the doctor to answer any questions before beginning the procedure. Second action nurses could take would be for them to always tell the truth to their patients and not withhold any known information. Patients have rights to know every detail that is happening with their bodies and what is being done.…
According to Pozgar (2016), the deontological theory of ethics focusses on one’s duty towards another, or another’s rights, to determine what is ethical behavior. The outcome of the behavior is not the focus. As long as the behavior supports one’s duty to another then it is considered ethical. In the case of Vogelsburger v. Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC (PA Super, 2006), the plaintiff sued the hospital for medical malpractice, due to the complications she experienced while being administered morphine. She asserted that she was not properly monitored after her surgery, while she was receiving the strong pain medication via a PCA.…
Doctor’s Hospital is an acute care facility in a small town. Due to a major financial disruption they had to transform their organization’s governing structure. As a result, they did not consider the impact of CIO in IT and they turn CIO’s full-time job into a part-time job. Therefore, Doctor’s Hospital faces many information system challenges. Along with that hospital is undergoing 3 phase construction.…
