The future requires businesses to focus on the triple bottom line (people, profit, planet) in order to be sustainable. An example of business model that failed because of their inability to be sustainable was DuPont Chemicals. DuPont decided to ignore the triple bottom line and dump all their excess chemicals into a local water supply contaminating the water supply and destroying the eco system around it. When DuPont was found for their injustice it caused a huge problem for their business and ultimately made them not nearly as profitable as they could’ve been if they had decided to deal with their negative externalities in a sustainable manner, and follow a stakeholder approach to business. A good example of a sustainable company is Patagonia a company that prides itself on using recyclable material to make its products. Patagonia also advocates for the protection of the environment, and have proven that a company can be sustainable and successful in the business world. However, the problem with this is there are far more DuPont’s in the world than Patagonia and this is why I ultimately believe we are moving to fast as a society in the means of production, but we are moving to slow as a society to fix the treadmill effect and climate …show more content…
The forest is one of our last sources of nature balancing out all of our emissions that we are releasing into the atmosphere. Deforestation is rising at an alarming rate and if we don’t solve this problem we wont have anything left to counter our negative externalities. The destruction of the forest is caused by our inability to as human race to put the world we live in over the made up economic world we have built within it. Finally, water waste is a rising issue as our population continues grow and our clean water supply is depleting. A few reasons for our depleting clean water supply are the pollution of clean water due to pollution. One of the main causes of polluting water is fracking and chemical dumping which are huge negative externalities from big companies ignoring their environmental responsibilities. Another way we are depleting our water supply is in the agriculture system. The amount of water we use to raise a cow is insurmountable. The amount it takes to raise one pound of beef is equivalent to 2,400 gallons of water, and we as humans consume that easily. Advocating for the human race to stop eating meat is not plausible, therefore I believe this problem will continue to grow. Concluding that us as a human race are to focused on materialistic products, money, and our economy. These factors are all irrelevant until we solve the climate disaster,
