Additionally, 40 percent of these pregnancies end in abortion. Therefore, in order to reduce unintended pregnancies and inevitable abortions contraception should be implemented. Women who used contraception correctly only accounted for 5 percent of unintended pregnancies, while women who didn’t use any form of contraception accounted for 54 percent of unintended pregnancies. However, some still argue that the 5 percent of women that avoided unintended pregnancies by implementing contraception are part of the 40 percent that end in abortion. An argument often made against contraception is that it is an early form of abortion and they don’t actually prevent conception. Contraceptives fall into two groups, hormonal and barrier. Hormonal contraceptives prevent women from ovulating so no egg is ever released for fertilization and therefore no conception occurs, disproving the claim that conception isn’t prevented. Additionally, barrier contraceptives block sperm from ever reaching the egg, although this method offers room for error, if performed correctly sperm should again never reach the egg and conception is in fact prevented.
