As main stream denominations continue to shrink and modern day evangelicalism has morphed into something more politically and conservatively centered, I found “Rescuing Jesus; How People of Color, Women and Queer Christians are Reclaiming Evangelism”, by Deborah Jian Lee, enlightening, profound and hopeful as it centers on new, out of the box ways in which people generally pushed into the margins, are redefining their evangelical Christianity. “Evangelicalism is anything but a monolith; it is a vastly diverse landscape”. Meaning, not all evangelicals are the same and perhaps what we think of them or how we envision them is way off the mark.
Jian Lee attempts to show us through three different lenses or sections, those who are reframing, redefining and claiming their presence in the evangelical movement. Part one Conformists, part two Skeptics, part three, Radicals. As these titles suggest, this book takes us through the birthing pains of each person’s evangelical experience including her own.
The stories contained within these pages, are of men and women who come from all areas of life. Whether those in the LGBTQ community, or people of color, Jian Lee is able to relay the racial tensions (Michael Brown) and discrimination that still surrounds them. Yet, …show more content…
The title was a message in and of itself that was pressed upon me at an early age. Women must be pure and chaste and abstinence is the way to go. (This further exacerbates the matter of women and their sexual identity/empowerment to be discussed later).
