Reflection On The Anatomy Of Care

“The Anatomy of Care” video posed interesting questions on the topic of patient care, and whether or not caring is innate. A person in the video stated that, “caring just comes naturally for people that go into the medical profession. They just have it or they wouldn’t be here”. While I would agree that most people in the healthcare profession enjoy caring for people, I do not think caring comes without learning how to do it. As people, we often have sympathy for people in distress. This does not mean that we will always care for them or act in a caring way towards them. However, I think caring for a stranger or person that is ill is much different and more challenging. I have never knew that the art caring is actually considered a science. I have long thought that people in the healthcare field simply followed the golden rule: “treat others the way you would like to be treated”. After seeing the video and reading the article, I can understand why the art of caring is considered a science, and it is in dire need of being taught to all who interact with patients. In order to improve the care of patients, I think everyone has to be made aware that caring for an individual is more than just following the golden rule, but it is a science. Caring for a patient is not just being nice to them, but it is advocating for them at every level of care and protecting their best interest. Every interaction with a patient is an opportunity to show one’s competency not only by using evidence based practices but also evidence based caring practices. For me, I think this will cause me to really reassess how I interact with other people and how my behaviors may come off as less than
