The analects are where the fundamental Confucian morals come from. Many Asian government systems of the past, including that of the Choson dynasty Korea is based off of these essential Confucian principles. In fact, the influence of Confucianism can be even seen in today’s governments of countries such as China and Korea. One of the most critical concepts in Confucianism based societies is that of filial piety and the different kinds of relationships between people. This can be seen just after analects 1:7 where Hsieh replies to Tzu-hsia that: ‘closeness between father and son, duty between ruler and subject, and faith between friends’; if one is able to be like this, then elders will certainly have precedence over juniors and between husband and wife there will certainly be distinct [spheres]. ‘The way that Shun became Shun,’ ‘his example worthy of being handed down for generations,’ could it be beyond this? The sage is the epitome of human-relatedness. (Selover 83)

The word for wife, anae literally means inside person, while husband nampyo means outside person. Honorifics are another way that women where placed below men. Letters from Ha tomb is an example of the language a husband and wife use. In the letters the wife, Ha, uses a high honorifics for elders in the letters while the husband, Kwak Chu, uses a medium level honorifics meant for someone junior in age (Haboush 251). This displays the idea that the wife was beneath her husband and must respect him. The honorifics used in this letter are also likely due to the age difference between husband and wife. A husband was typically older than his wife, causing the age difference alone to allow for the use of honorifics. These honorifics are part of the key human relationships that Mencius
