Before the American with Disabilities Act, there were other laws passed in order to improve with quality of life for those with disabilities; acts such as the education for all handicapped children, which ensured that all children even those with disabilities, had a free public education. According to Minor and Minor the Architectural Barriers Act of 1968, which focused on accessibility to and within federal buildings (2014 Chapter 1, p.8). The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Revised ADA regulations Implementing Title II and Title III Retrieved states that The American with Disabilities Act was officially signed into law in 1990;the ADA prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, State and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation (http://www.ada.gov/2010_regs.htm). Public places such as hotels, offices, and restaurants must make the recommended accommodations. The ADA regulates that architectural designs must accommodate a broad spectrum of disabilities resulting from a range of impairments (Minor, & Minor, Chapter 1 p.8). Certain architectural designs that must be meet are certain width of hallways and door openings, stall size for bathrooms that vary based on how the door opens, railing and step height among others.
