American Pragmatism Theory Analysis

I feel I can relate to the American pragmatism theory outlined by Amer (2013) which “emphasizes the importance of experience, reflection, lifelong learning, and the relationship of theory to practice”. Nurses who practice American pragmatism focus on finding solutions collectively and through creatively, as well as, encouraging other (our patients and or fellow coworkers) “to find hope in the midst of despair” (Amer, 2013). Why do I relate to this philosophy? Probably because of how nursing is in constant motion. There are new practices and changes in old practices which creates an environment of learning every day. There is so many areas and avenues of growth within our field and I have found I love presenting teaching topics and precepting new nurses. I have a unique perspective (having been a critically injured patient) that makes me relatable at times for patients when dealing with setbacks and pain.
Amer (2013) advises for us to “knowingly participate in change, speak up: learn the art of considerate interruption, find a mentor, and attend graduate school or further your certification” (p. 91). I feel I am already embracing the above praxis for change within my unit and or continuing to learn how to grow within these recommendations. For example, I participate on our units partnership counsel which meets monthly to address specifics concerns related to our unit. The concerns brought forth in our council meetings have ranged from nursing prevention concerns (i.e. handwashing and or VAP/CAUTI/ CLABSI) unit moral, and retention/ recruitment ideas.
