Native American Negative Image Essay

Superior Essays
The American Indian has been represented in a negative manner for years. From the offensive depictions in old history books, to the terrible movies of the 1950’s. I recall watching a special on Ronald Reagan and he played the role of an Indian. That to me was very offensive to Native Americans and his role was that of a silly Native American.
American for years have hated Native Americans and what they stood for as a people. When the first settlers arrived their first contact was peaceful when it came to Native Americans. The Native people shared their ideas and skills with the settlers. The settlers repaid them by murdering them and stealing their vital lands. These actions have made for a challenging relationship with our federal government.

My immediate reaction was one that was offended by these mascots. I being from Cleveland, Ohio our mascot was changed a couple of years ago, because it offended Native Americans. The Indians organization was nice enough to change the logo to a letter C. Many Clevelanders were against this change and fought against this change.
This is not the only offensive image of Native Americans the Washington Redskins is another one. Negative images are symbols of racism and can be worse than actually saying a negative statement. As an African American negative images have come in, many forms many of them are religious in nature. One example is the image of Jesus did not look like the image portrayed on paintings. Jesus was a black man and instead of the Catholic Church showing it in a positive light.
They used a false depiction and used it as a form of white power. This image and the religion was used as vehicle to lynch and murder blacks. The same goes for the Indian mascots these negative mascots, fuels acts of oppression against these people. If individuals truly understood the history of Native Americans they would have got rid of these mascot years

Response to Ward Churchill’s Essay There are several reasons why Ward Churchill argues that names of sports teams such as “Braves”, “Indians”, and “Chiefs” are examples of outright racism and as insulting to Native Americans as the “Redskins” mascot. First, in real life, names of Indian Americans (in a combination with native symbols and images) are frequently used in a derogatory manner, depicting native Indians as inhuman, menacing, and grotesque. Using tribal names of Indian Americans helps to condition general public to view Native Americans as savages by associating names of tribes with dehumanizing, offensive, and derogatory practices. Second, although it may be argued that such names are intended to demonstrate respect for Native…

During one of the games the Braves fans did the tomahawk chop and screamed indian chants throughout the game. And the Indians fans proudly waved fake tomahawks and covered their faces in paint. This caused a revolt; native american activists waited outside the stadium with signs and protested the inappropriate use of their symbols. People should not be getting mad about native american mascots or names, it is doing no harm to anyone and anything. The main reason for symbols is to bring a community closer together.…

I have never had any experience with the “Indian Mascot” debate, in fact, I never really looked or had a deep thought about these issues. I think if someone is not first handed involved when it concerning these issues, him or her will not have any idea to what extent it hurts. I strongly feel that if the non-indigenous people use the indigenous names that were being referred to them by other people and images used by those same other people in the past are now being used now in this civilized world as a symbol of an athletic term or school then it is insulting and degrading. I think those teams and school should use the images and things that are associated with the town or what they represent instead of using images or names of another ethnicity.…

The Natives were seen as bestial creatures rather than humans; their characteristics and actions broken down into that of an immoral, impulsive animal. This led to the widespread idea that Indian men were like prurient beasts; lustful creatures who would see a white American woman, lust for her, and attack her (Source ___). Americans grew resentful of natives; women feared for their safety, and men enraged at the thought that an inferior race would touch their white women. This idea was prolonged in the 1960s and early 1970s, when television westerns, such as Gunsmoke, showed villainous Native American attempting to savagely rape a white woman, only for her to be saved at the last moment by a heroic white man, (Source COCK). Native Americans were outraged because their population as a whole was being depicted as beasts and criminals based on a racist, negative sexual stereotype, however, the general population did not see a problem with the depictions, supporting such shows by watching them, and Indians were a minority so their discontent had little impact in a white-dominant society (Source…
