Due to a nationwide shortage in hospital’s nursing staff during the early 1980s. A group of researchers from the American Nurse Academy, set out to conduct a study from hospitals that were able to maintain adequate nursing staff. Several hospitals that participated in the study seem to have similar characteristics. The outcomes revealed that the top hospitals all identified with what is known as the 14 forces of magnetism (http://www.ANCC.org). It is a program designed by the ANCC, to provide the framework for nursing practice and research in the future. It was created so that health care organization, the nursing profession, and the patient community, would benefit in many ways. One of the benefits of the Magnet program, is that organization will attract and retain top talent. When professional see how well organized, a structure health care center is, they tend to stay longer in the organization. Also, when a health care organization fosters’ a collaborative culture, environment, employees tend to be happier and appreciate their jobs, it’s about teamwork, and empowerment. In addition, when an organization has a happy team of employees, so will patient care, safety, and satisfaction. The first category is the transformation of leadership. Which consist of force one, Quality of Nursing Leadership and force three, which is, Management Style. Leaders need to be empowered through education and knowledge, meaning that the chief nursing officer should hold a minimum of a masters, and nurse managers should maintain a bachelor degree. Management are required to transform an organization’s values, beliefs, and behaviors. An organizations’ leaders need to create the vision for the future. Leaders need to enlighten their employees to why change is important, and the leaders themselves need to change their way of thinking. Through influential leadership comes structural empowerment, which is the second category in Magnetism.
