The American Lung Association of the Mountain Pacific (ALA) serves Alaska, Hawai’i, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming (ALA, 2016). Although the programs in each state varies based on the needs of the community, the Mountain Pacific states are dedicated to the same mission of improving lung health and preventing lung disease (ALA, 2016).
Community engagement is an important component of the ALA’s marketing. On the individual level, the LUNG FORCE heroes allow community members to share their experience with lung disease to inspire and empower others to advocate for clean air (Lung Force, 2016). The strategic plan is used to guide each Mountain Pacific state towards fulfilling the ALA’s mission and improving access to services by the year 2020. The strategic plan was developed through collaboration between each of the Mountain Pacific offices. One of the national goals for all states was to increase volunteer engagement to drive organizational growth. Goals that were specific to Hawai’i included connecting with Native Hawaiian serving organizations, such as Papa Ola Lokahi and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. By partnering with these organizations, the ALA can increase access of services to the Native Hawaiian community, which continue to experience the highest smoking rates in the state (CDC, 2016). Due to varying goals among each state, there are also significant differences in programming.
Demographic differences and environmental factors create unique health problems for each population. In Alaska, due to the low prevalence of asthma, funding for asthma programs are extremely limited. However, Hawai’i has a high prevalence of asthma among children due to air pollution produced by volcanic emissions (ALA, 2016). Because each state has unique challenges, certain states may focus more on policy issues, while others focus on programming.
