The day was finally here. The traditional event for the seniors in the Dominican International School on Masquerade Night was starting. For the students in Dominican International School, Masquerade Night, a fair at night, is the time to earn money for the class fund and have fun with the activities that each class and the Student Council planned. As the time for the Masquerade Night approached, none of us was planning for the haunted house, and everyone was working with his or her school work. About two weeks before the Masquerade Night, I was so frustrated by others’ ignorance of this event since at the beginning of the school year, everyone was excited about this activity and said he or she would make this haunted house the creepiest ever. It was a night like most others in the abandoned ghost town. All I saw was darkness and shadows creeping around every corner. I heard the howls of coyotes and the hooting of owls through the midnight air. The whistling wind rang the rusty, wind chimes dangling from the old run-downed mansion. The sign above read “Muddy Creek Manor”.…

With Halloween taking place just about a month ago and me being a first-year college student, I found it suitable to choose a topic that related to both college and the holiday that so many of America’s youth actively participate in these days. So, I began my research; through countless amounts of Google searches and digging through all sorts of news websites, I finally found an interesting article from The New York Times. The title was “Why Halloween at College Is So Frightening” and was written by a man named Mark Bauerlein who teaches at Emory University. The periodical starts off by explaining the scary effects that Halloween can induce on the students and administration across many of today’s college campuses. This is particularly because…

In this nineteenth century ghostly narrative, James transforms the classic ghost story into a much more relatable entity. Rather than solely incorporating shrills, shrieks and scares of a normal ghost story. He tacks on the additional layer of text regarding social class by providing the reader with a window into the highly structured class conflict within the nineteenth century. More clearly, James outlines the adverse effects of one’s attempt to alter their social position. Throughout the novel, he attempts to show how certain individuals can be vulnerable to heightened stress levels when attempting to merge their social identity by breaking the social class barrier and increase status.…
