The American Idea The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald is about a man, Nick Carraway, telling the story of Gatsby and his undying love for Daisy. Unfortunately Gatsby is not able to be with Daisy because she is married to Tom Buchanan and because eventually, Gatsby gets murdered because of horrible lies that Tom had spread. Many characters in this book show how the American dream is not a standard and not something that is attainable. can have. It represents how the American dream is only an idea of always wanting more, making it unable to achieve. People cannot stay happy forever, they will always want more, and they will always end up unimpressed having to be optimistic. In the book, Nick explains this with Daisy by saying …”and I knew that except for the half-hour she’d been alone with Gatsby she wasn’t having a good time.” (Fitzgerald 105-106). Daisy was at a party with many famous people with lots of alcohol and basically anything she wanted, yet she was still not having fun because of how hard she is to please. She has had the chance to have whatever she wants and because of that, her expectations are too high, therefore making her impossible to impress and stay that way. Because of her family and Tom, Daisy has a huge house, a ginormous yard, gets to go where she wants any time of day or night, wears the most expensive clothes, goes to many parties with famous people and her best friend is a professional golfer. Another example of this is at the end of the book when Nick is talking about Gatsby 's dreams and how people generally aim to high with their dreams that they are unable to successfully fulfill it. Nick explains “His dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it.” (Fitzgerald 180). Gatsby had this goal to be with Daisy and he thought that he could be with her and in the end he did not end up getting her because of his tragic death. Gatsby was murders because of Tom Buchanan telling George Wilson that Gatsby had killed his wife to make Tom look like the good guy to Wilson. The …show more content…
Some may argue that many people shoot above the standards of just getting done what needs to be done because they believe in doing more that the average, In the fall of 2015, some 20.2 million students enrolled in college and University education in the United States alone. All of these people are going in hopes to further their education, which is always an advantage because they have the idea to better themselves and not just do the bare minimum. These people may go on to get great jobs that will allow them to, buy a house and have a family. All of which are factors of being happy and being able to sustain the happiness
