The American Dream, unique to the United States, is an idea that everyone has an equal opportunity to move up in the world. This means that everyone has the chance to work hard, and be rewarded for it. Unlike most countries, the United States firmly believes that everyone should have equal rights, opportunities, and chances to succeed. The ideals of the American Dream were first started at the end of the Great Depression, and now that the United States has gone through an economic recession, the true question is whether or not these ideals can survive through the next generation. In the early 1900’s blacks and women were not allowed to vote. Women gradually won their right to their own dream, when they received the right to vote, own property, and many other things that they could not previously do. Although black Americans had to wait until the Civil Rights Movement lead by Martin Luther King Jr. before they were allowed to vote and therefore able to get their own American Dream. Just 44 years after black Americans were allowed to vote, Barack Obama was elected as the first black president of the United States, all thanks to the American Dream.
I define the American Dream as one 's ability to be more successful than their parents were and therefore give their children better lives and opportunities than they were given. However, this does not imply that you have to be very wealthy to achieve the American Dream, it only implies that you are slightly more well off than your parents were. The one true way to achieve the American Dream is through hard work, and in the United States hard work is rewarded with better pay, a happier life, and a more successful life for you and your
