From living on the streets with his young son, nothing but an internship that had a low success rate to cling on too, Chris had managed to think positive and find objectives that allowed him to be hired to be a broker, hence starting his career and saving his family from poverty. With so much research behind lives such as Gardeners, the attainability of the American Dream varies in history and of literature as evidence in “Of Mice and Men”, “Brother can you Spare a Dime?”, Steve Jobs’s Commencement Speech, and Dr.Martin Luther King J.r’s speech, “I Have a Dream.”
The American Dream is not attainable in the 1930’s as stated in John Steinbeck's book, “Of Mice and Men”. Steinbeck had defined the American Dream as creating an ideal life with nothing or little to start with. Characters in the book, Curley, Lennie, and George, is a keen example of this dream. The three of them wanted to buy their own house and sustain themselves. "it’d be our own, a’ nobody could can us.” ( Steinbeck 53) George says. In the Great Depression, it is rare to see people living with prosperity without any help from others. Jobs definition of the American dream is, if you love what you do, keep on achieving your goals and pursuit it- never give up on what makes you feel happiest. ( History 1) In the speech, Jobs declared, "Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did." (Jobs 13) Jobs loved creating new technology, and even after he got fired from his own company, he did not stop doing what he loved. "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." (Jobs 13) Why settle for something that doesn't give you fulfillment in life? Strive for what you want, and you can achieve greatness. While we may not all reach the same levels of success, everyone has this great opportunity as Americans to pursue a life and start our own creation of desire around our lives. Sometimes to do that it comes from taking a failed dream and turning it around, just like Jobs did. If you live your life, and don't waste time by helping someone else's, focus on your passions and become prosperous and victorious in your own American Dream.
