Although there is freedom and opportunity, the line has been crossed many times in the name of equality. People are not treated the same whether it be on there gender, race, religion or age. Fredrick Douglass, a freed slave, stated, "What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us?" Fredrick Douglass is insisting that the so called independence celebrated in the United States, does not include himself or others that share his color of skin. Fredrick Douglass was a freed slave, so he experienced the evils of slavery. During Douglass ' speech, the African American population were being treated cruelly, so the claim on the distribution of independence is perfectly addressing the inequality in the United States. On the other hand, the Declaration of Independence articulated on the preposition, "that all men are created equal." In other words, every citizen that steps onto American soil, is neither more nor less significant than each other in any way, shape, or form. They want a house, job and family that they can be proud of. Although success is coveted, it is not attainable for everybody. According to Henry George, "one poor girl who worked really hard one week and made $3.50; but the fines against her were $5.25. That seems ridiculous; it is ridiculous, but it is pathetic and it is shameful." In other words, success is impossible when a job is insufficient to the amount of money owed to a third party. If the amount of money owed outweighs the amount of money gained, then there is no margin for profit; and when there is no margin for profit, then there is no margin for success. On the other hand, George Bush put into place the American Dream Down Payment fund. "When a low income family is qualified to buy a home, but comes up short on the down payment, the American Dream Foundation Fund will help provide the needed funds." George Bush and his administration set up a program to pay the rest of the down payment of homes for the lower class. The American Dream Down Payment Fund allows less fortunate families to purchase houses. When people own homes, they are more successful because they can support their family by putting a roof over their head. On the contrary, there are people that cannot even qualify to buy a house at all; where is there salvation?
