According to Fitzgerald the American Dream stresses the importance of a wealthy life, and a wife of high social status. In both his works 'The Great Gatsby ' and 'Winter Dreams ' two men from a poor background fall in love with a girl and achieve financial succession in order to win her heart. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby chases a girl that 's already taken, but that doesn 't stop her. Daisy Buchanan manipulates Gatsby into thinking they ever even has a chance when in reality she has a kid, and a life that she doesn 't see a problem with. Everything he strived for and accomplished was worth a summer. To say that is depressing is an understatement. Gatsby 's lifetime high was when he was throwing insane parties full of unidentified people, and spending his time with a girl who has no true feelings for him, a friend who doesn 't accurately know who he is, a man who hates every part of him, and Jordan who is indifferent. Jay Gatsby’s life is a rocky boat that never finds clear waters. He comes from a somewhat rough childhood, and then he meets a man that he grew to idolize and eventually mimics as an adult. He then met Daisy and fell in love, but had to go away to war. When he came back from war she was gone. To win her he illegally becomes wealthy, and throws several famously well-known parties. His luck turns up and he encounters Daisy after all these years, but she has moved on and will continue to tease him. While in reality is perfectly content with her husband. To top it all off he takes the blame for Daisy killing her husband’s mistress in a “hit and run” to protect Daisy. Finally he is murdered for his foolishness and his complete blindness to the ruse called the American Dream. No matter what Gatsby would come to Daisy’s defense and ruin his life, and give all
