"The theme in The Great Gatsby is the pursuit of the American Dream."(Humphreys,2010). The "American Dream" can be defined as any goal you set for you and/or your family. In the novel it shows what the American Dream was like in the 1920's and how the characters achieved the Dream. Myrtle, Gatsby, and Daisy let their Dreams destroy their reality of life. Today's American Dream and the 1920's American Dream has one major similarity, money. "Everyone wants the material things, they want to live a lavish life rather than a simple one."(Ferenz,1997). Myrtle,Gatsby,and Daisy were guilty of wanting the finer things.

Her dreams get destroyed when she finds out about Tom’s affair with Myrtle. Tom is abusive towards Daisy, she does not speak upon it. Daisy thought she had the perfect life with money, love, and happiness, she soon realizes she does not when her daughter is born. “I hope she’ll be a fool-that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful fool.” (Fitzgerald,16). Daisy wants her daughter to be clueless about the bad that men do, so her feelings will not get hurt. We can see in the novel that Daisy does not really pay much attention to this child, she is never around and only shows up in the novel once for brief moment. She believes that women have limited possibilities in this world, which is why she would rather have a boy.
