A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry is a realistic fictional drama in which the play’s title and the actions of the characters represent the play’s theme. The play is focused on Black Americans struggles to reach the American Dream of Life,Liberty, and pursuing happiness ,During the 1950’s and 1960’s . The idea of everyone having the chance to achieve a better life should exist for all. Hansberry created her title using a line from Langston Hughes’ poem “ A Dream Deferred”, The original poem was written in the 1951 about Harlem. Beneatha’s American Dream was to become a doctor. Beneatha was going to achieve this goal by going to school to educate herself in medicine. Her dream was deferred when Willy also stole her schooling money. A quote from the book A Raisin in the sun Pg ___ Mama - “SON- son... it is gone ? son, I gave you sixty- five hundred dollars. Is it gone ? All of it ? Beneatha’s money too ?”...... Mama - “You mean.. your sister’s school money .... you used that too ...” Walter - “ YESSSS ! all of it ... it 's all gone....” Walter used all his money and his sister money , it was very selfish of him to use Beneatha’s money and not put it in the bank like he was suppose to. He was only thinking about himself and his business and not about his sister education. Beneatha American dream is to be an independent woman, who doesn 't want to be like every other woman in her time, who is just a typical housewife or gets married and has children. Lena (Mama) American Dream is she wants to get her family out of poverty, her dream is to live in a nice house. This dream was deferred because she was waiting for her husband 's check to buy her and her family a nice house . A quote from the book A Raisin in the sun Pg 91 Mama to Travis: “Now when you say your prayers tonight, you thank God and your grandfather—‘cause it was him who give you the house—in his way.” She was telling Travis to say thank you to his grandfather because his check gave him a new place to say. Travis will have his own room and won 't be sleeping on the couch anymore.
