Everyone, from a small child learning their ABC's to a grown adult working in a silent cubicle 5-7 days a week, has a dream. Of course, these dreams will differ, but the idea is the same. Everyone has a goal they set. Perhaps the child's goal is to become president, or an astronaut. The adult's goal could be to travel, or get the girl/guy that they've had their eye on. The American Dream, like these, is a goal. The child can't become president overnight, and the adult won't receive the large sum of money to travel overnight. Likewise, the American Dream cannot be achieved overnight.. They taught that sometimes a dream can be a dream, but can quickly turn into a nightmare. As for those who are on the road to achieving their dreams, their issues lie in the dangers of working hard. In the early days, working hard meant constantly working, which isn't healthy. As for those who reached their goals, many of them become blinded by their success and fortune and make mistakes. George made a mistake on the road to accomplishing their dream when he made the conscious decision to end Lennie's life. Out of greed or feeling as though Lennie was an albatross on his shoulders, George killed Lennie. Greed drives people to madness, and pushes many to their mental limits, which can result in rash decisions such as this.
