African American and White students from my school used it as an insult to the Asian students who were not born in America. I noticed that not only Americans used this term, but also Chinese who was born in America would call Asian foreigners FOBs because of their thick and heavy accent, as if foreigners FOBs just got off the boat from Asia. FOB is quite derogatory. I remembered that one of my Asian friends, Jenny, called me a “FOB” back in high school because I speak my native language fluently and I got good grades in math. “The only subject that you did good in is math and that’s ALL,” she said. As her friend, I thought she used “FOB” as a compliment to me until the day of my graduation ceremony. John, Chinese immigrant student, were giving out a speech on the stage. He said, “People should stop calling me a FOB. Yes, I was born in China, but I’m fluent in English. It’s very painful for me when people calls me a FOB because I’m not.” Then I figured that FOB can go from positive to negative meaning depending on how and when people use it. On the other hand, my uncles, aunts, and cousins use FOB as a family joke. FOB only refers to the young age like my sister because she moved to America when she was 4 and the first thing she learn in school is English, so she can’t write any Chinese characters and speak in fluent
