The American Dream
The American Dream is a novel which has been published in many forms and editions. The Epic of America, which was first written in 1931 by James Truslow Adams during the Great Depression, has been republished by Jim Cullen. The book expresses how the dream for the inhabitants of America came to be from the Puritans. From then, the Declaration of Independence was introduced after the shackles were broken that British monarchy had on us and how the fight to gain independence affects us today. Anyone and everyone can take something with the idea of dream. Some people carry this dream with their life while others don’t even deem it as living. This idea of a dream can also come from what our ancestors drew for us while making the Declaration of Independence and every other important life-changing document. These pieces of paper changed us, for better or worse, and allowed for us to believe and aspire to make America as best as it can be. The book goes through six events which portray a version of the American Dream: the first being the Puritan and their quest for the “Manifest Destiny” and the spread of Christianity amongst the newly founded continent of North American. The second one being when the British-American won their freedom from Parliament and the British monarchy by passing the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The third is Lincoln 's abolishment of slavery and led an upwards mobility to the dream, as it was the pinnacle of American life.The fourth is the case of Plessy v. Ferguson which strived for the equality of African Americans and the civil rights movement in the 1950’s and 60’s led by Martin Luther King Jr. who influenced the American Dream drastically. The fifth reason which is simple: home ownership. Simple, yes but it caused for suburban life and family life to prosper and grow. I just want others to be happy and free like I have been in the past 16 years of my life. Everyone deserves to be free and happy and not have a care in the world, so that’s why migration of immigrants to our country should be allowed, but with extensive checks and testing, of course. We can 't just allow anyone in our secure and protected country, even though it seems prejudice to criticize an innocent person when one of the dreams is about equality amongst everyone. I also believe that our rights should be expressed more like the right to protest and speech. I see protesting all the time like for same-sex rights this past fall, and our right to speak is there but, I feel the public is afraid. Afraid of what, exactly? A lot of things, like the 2016 Presidential Election, which will most likely be Trump vs. Clinton. Trump says a lot about protection and safety, but with us being almost $19 trillion dollars in debt,how will he manage to “build a wall around the US”? There’s many factors that worry the citizens of the United States of America, but hopefully, we will survive. To conclude this, The American Dream by Jim Cullen is a novel about the dream that we fought for and what it is. I believe that this dream is truly the one that all citizens, now and then, believed for and that will continue until the USA is no more.
