In the town was a federal arsenal which held the weapons and ammunition for the government. Brown’s plan was to take over the arsenal and then had out the weapons to the slaves who wanted to fight and end their enslavement. However, when John Brown did take control of the arsenal, only a few slaves showed up to fight. That was a problem for Brown because his entire plan laid on the help from the slaves. Come morning the town figured out what Brown was doing and they began to attack the arsenal where John Brown was. After Thirty-two hours of fighting, John Brown sent one of his sons out with a flag of truce. The town responded by shooting and killing him and continue to attacking the arsenal. Finally, the federal army came and they were able to capture John Brown and five others. John Brown was later hung and the other five executed also. But before Brown died, he said that the end of slavery would only come after much bloodshed. John Brown was correct as it took a civil war to end slavery. His radical ideas of abolitionism caused both sides problems. This caused the North to feel oppressed because the government allowed the spread and continue of slavery. The Pottawatomie Massacre led by John Brown resulted in five white slave owners being chopped to death by swords wielded by John Brown and his sons. Also John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry that ended in the hanging of John Brown and the deaths of thirteen others. This put pressure on the South because the one thing slave owners feared to happen did, a slave revolt. Both the Massacre and the raid placed pressure on the North because people then had to decide whether or not to agree with what John Brown did. This caused a gap of mistrust and fear that would never be filled to the point of bloodshed. The event that caused the nation to split was the Election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln became president, and because he spoke out against slavery, the South seceded from the Union.
