The benefits of knowing a foreign language are undeniable in the current U.S. economy. In this article, the author successfully points out the national needs in foreign language and international studies. In addition, she uses analytical data to show how important it is to implement these skills in the U.S higher education.
In term of explaining the importance of knowing a foreign language in current U.S. economy, the article is not very useful since the main purpose of the article was to encourage the implementation of international education in schooling in the United States instead of pointing out the benefits of it.
Fry, Richard, and Lindsay Lowell B. "The Value of Bilingualism in the U.S. Labor Market." Industrial & labor relations review 57.1 (2003): 128-40. In the article, the authors presents important analytical data that were collected by the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) to roughly estimate the wages of bilingual workers compared to the wages of English monolingual workers in the United States labor market. The authors successfully use the data to show the difference in earning between different levels of understanding a foreign language and knowing English only.
