The Ambiguity Of Interpretation In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

Decent Essays
In the short story "Young Goodman Brown", the main character is a man disillusioned by sin. At the end of the story, the reader realizes that all of his disillusionment was a dream, but he continues to believe the lies in his reality. This affects the story because obviously all of those characters are not truly evil. Everyone is a sinner. That doesn’t mean that the way his dream portrayed those characters such as Faith, Goody Cloyse, The Minister, and Deacon Gookin is correct representations of their character. This tells us that Goodman Brown is easily swayed in his opinion and that he truly doesn’t have much faith. I think the ambiguity of interpretation is related to the story’s theme because sin seems to distort reality and cause you to

Most of Hawthorne’s critics feel as if “Young Goodman Brown” one of his best works. In my opinion D.C. McKeithan chooses to interpret Hawthorne’s tale by using an example of a man who is saddened into distrust by the sins of the people surrounding him. He is made skeptical and untrusting of others because of his own contributes into sin. McKeithan goes around this by mainly seeing that while there are a bunch of different interpretations, past critics have failed to realize some of the most apparent parts of the story.…

In "Young Goodman Brown", when Goodman Brown are into the woods, some church and clergy figures are being shown particularly, that they are participating in the evil ritual. In additions, the two portaryals of sins are different. The one in the “Sinner in the Hands of an Angry God”, they do not have faith even no regret for what they have done, and do not believe in God, comparing to the sinners in the “Goodman Brown”, I think they are more wicked and unforgiveable. The sinners in the “Goodman Brown”, they still have faith and show hesitation all the time. Thirdly, the audiences are different.…

Literary Device Usage: Young Goodman Brown While reading the story "Young Goodman Brown", the literary device usage was plentiful, while there was many options to choose from, I feel that symbolism is one of the most frequently used literary devices in this story, and also the most meaningful. The author did not stray away from the use of religious symbolism, although everyone interprets things differently, I think that is the point, that's why authors use symbolism and other literary devices. I feel that symbolism is one of the most obvious devices used well in this story. When the character first arises in the forest, he seems to be an ordinary man that had a staff with a serpent carved into it. My father being a preacher,…

When Goodman Brown arrives to the dark forest, the devil says,“You are late, Goodman Brown,” and Brown responds, “ Faith kept me back a while” (Hawthorne 808). The name Faith in the story is important because apart from being just a name it also symbolizes, Goodman’s own religious faith. Therefore, when Brown says, “Faith kept me back” not only is Goodman referring to his wife but he is also referring to his own religious faith. Later in the forest, Goodman Brown’s wanted to go home to Faith. Goodman Brown told the devil, “ Having kept covenant by meeting thee here, it is my purpose now to return whence I came.…

The theme, the loss of innocence, focuses on Goodman Brown and the experiences he undergoes which inevitably changes his life for the worse. However, Brown resists going through with his agreement to follow the Traveler, as the evil ahead is against his family’s Christian beliefs. Goodman Brown also fears that Faith’s heart would be broken were he ever to join the evil that she had dreamt about. The Traveler eventually allows Brown to leave at his own will and Goodman Brown appears to fall asleep in the forest. Yet it is unclear whether the events that follow are a dream or reality and because of his guilt, Brown dies with no good in his heart. Looking from the beginning of the story to when Goodman Brown mentions a covenant to the Traveler, focusing on Brown, Faith, and the Traveler’s dialogue and the narration, we can see Goodman Brown is not a valid model for imitation; however, looking at “Young Goodman Brown” from when Goodman Brown first wants to turn back to when they first see Goody Cloyse walking in the forest, focusing on Goodman Brown’s dialogue and the narration, we can see Goodman Brown is also a valid model for…

The sky broadly establishes the setting in “Young Goodman Brown”, which develops character. The "sunset" (55) represents a growing darkness in his life, from light to dark, from innocence to exposed truths and sin. Often Hawthorne illustrates the setting as being "old tree[s]" (57) in an "old forest" (62), just like the Devil appears to be the older version of Brown and the ancient forest represents the aged, bitter man he will eventually become. Hawthorne refers to the forest as a "heathen wilderness" (62), which is a nod toward the godless sins that are supposedly committed in a forest, and the sins that are, as shown later. When Brown claims he will continue to resist the Devil, the sky turns from “blue” with “stars brightening” to “a cloud…

Goodman an innocent and credulous Christian through his meeting with the devil, his acceptation of the staff, his rejection to follow the devil and Goody Cloyse, and his refusal of baptism is transformed into a stern man who now can see people behind their immediat appearance. This short story is also prolifique with regard to literary devices. Imageries remain one aspect of this story that strikes the reader. For example, the depth or darkness of the forest and the evil communion with the altar depiction stand as if they were physically present in front of the reader.
