Religious conundrums and debates like this one were common in the medieval world, and caused some troubling ambiguity when it came to the absolution of one's immortal soul.
Tuchman discusses this vagueness of sin in her text. She raises questions such as is it a sin to be "tempted by another woman" and sleep with your wife to cool off and is it a sin to sleep with a pregnant or menopausal woman because it was not for procreation purposes? The Bible defines what a sin is through the Ten Commandments and other commandments, yet there are still some things that the Bible is unclear about regarding sin. The Corinthians thought that they knew the right from wrong, but they were mistaken. In 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses some of the issues the hedonistic and ascetic Corinthians were struggling with. The hedonists believed that to be spiritual they shouldn’t deny themselves anything while the ascetics believed that to be spiritual they should deny themselves all earthly pleasures. Paul corrects them by defining sin throughout 1 Corinthians.…

As stated early, Hester was forced into this emotionless marriage but, later in life, she met a man that had her heart. With the bliss of her emotions, Hester cheated on her husband. The love that caused her adultery, however, makes her sin lesser than Chillingworth’s. Although he does not blame Hester for her sin, because he knows he sinned and wronged her too, he puts the unknown man she sinned with at fault. Hester, not knowing who Chillingworth was upset with, worriedly asks, “ Hast thou enticed me into a bond that will prove the ruin of my soul?”…

Hester faces the same idea with Puritan views. The Puritans view her sin as a tragedy. However, Van Doren disagrees the view stating that, “She is not the subject of a sermon; she is the heroine of a tragedy, and she understands the tragedy” (Van Doren, 567). In this quote, Van Doren…

    2. Eve is a very important figure for Judaism because she is the first women that was created. The Jewish understanding of her is slightly different than the Christian understanding, in that Jews do not see Eve as the source of original sin like Christians do. The negative and most common way of viewing Eve is that she is the cause of the fall of humanity and the expulsion of her and Adam from the perfect Garden of Eden is blamed on her. Many people see her as weak because she fell for the lies of the serpent.…

Ibn Tufayl’s depiction of Hayy in the philosophical tale presents a contrast between the curiosity and malevolence of human behavior. Similar to the story of Adam and Eve’s sin, Ibn Tufayl begins this human society with the story of a king’s sister that married someone without permission and subsequently had a baby, as explicated by, “Now this king had a sister whom he forbade to marry until he himself should find a fitting match […] But she had a kinsman named Aware, and he married her secretly […] She soon conceived and bore him a son” (Ibn Tufayl’s Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Page 105). This shows the sin of lust, as the king’s sister married Aware secretly and had his child without permission.…

Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a narrative that retells the events leading up to the death of Santiago Nasar. Throughout the novella, there are many instances in which a man is in a place of power, however, the female characters often are denied this opportunity. Power can be defined as having the ability to stand up for yourself or others, make your own decisions, and having an important role in society. It is the sole characteristic that differentiates men from women in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Despite the few instances where women are placed in positions of power, Gabriel Garcia Marquez effectively proves that women are depicted as powerless through the use of machismo throughout the story, integrating Colombian gender roles…
