The Amazon Rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world. Covering over a billion acres in the countries of Brazil, Venezuela, and Columbia; the Amazon is home to 40,000 plant species, 1,300 bird species, 3,000 types of fish, 430 mammals and 2.5 million different insects. That’s a lot of life, not even including the 700,000 indigenous tribal people that are living in the Amazon today. This untamed jungle is disappearing fast, 14% of the world was covered by rainforests thousands of years ago and now it stands at merely 6%. Contrary to popular belief, the deforestation of these vast areas has a substantial effect on many people, the environment and western medicine. The problem of clean air seems to come up a lot in the media today. Looking at that, a person could ask why we keep polluting the air, but what about the destruction of wild places? Yes, pollution is the reason why there are so many toxins in the air, but, the air could be cleansed. Air today contains pollutants such as, benzene, formaldehyde, alcohols and acetone. When plants take in the polluted CO2 (carbon dioxide) it travels through a variety of systems within the plant and eventually is released as fresh, uncontaminated O2 (oxygen). If there were more places on Earth like the rainforest, air could potentially be cleaner and less toxic for all of the organisms that breathe it. Annihilating the rainforest at such a rapid rate is not only something society is going to regret, but something we cannot just replant. There are many foundations that have been created in order to save the rainforest. You can raise and donate money to fund these organizations to buy out acres of the rainforest so they are kept safe and natural. Education is also a huge role in this. Yes, in school kids learn about how the rainforest is being demolished and they are left to form their own opinion about the issue. However, this isn’t enough. Use recyclable materials and convince others to do so with you, you will not only save yourself money but you will not be contributing to the consumer needs for lumber and paper. Say no to palm oil! Palm oil is found in many processed foods today, read your food labels! Do not contribute to the consumption of Brazilian Beef, 60% of the land cleared from the Amazon is used for grazing and feed lots. Most importantly, teach others. Pass on the information you have learned, promote research and funding rainforest foundations. Educate the People. A small difference can go a long ways.
