Being that Santería was derived from African religions, it has many commonalities with the religion Vodou. While they do have their commonalities, they also have very distinct differences. However, The Altar of My Soul takes us on a very different journey than the book Mama Lola did. While Mama Lola allowed us to be spectators looking into the lives of others, The Altar Of My Soul gives us front row seats, allowing us to see the direct impact this religion has on the lives of people.

The book not only gave me an insight into the religion of Santería, but also into the life of Vega and her family. The Journey that the book took me on allowed me to escape reality and become engulfed into the joyous and lively religion of Santería. While Marta Vega 's main focus was to shine light onto her religion, she unconsciously shinned a light on my personal life. Vega unknowingly gave me the encouragement to persevere in my life and build a stronger connection with my religion. After seeing the way Vega blossomed into a different person due to her rekindling a relationship with her religion, I am eager to disconnect from her journey and start my own life
