The Allusion Of Achilles Heel

The allusion of Achilles’ heel that used in many literatures and medias, originated from Greek mythology. The origin of this allusion is that in Greek mythology, it was foretold that he would die in a young age when he was a baby. So his mother, Thetis, who wanted Achilles to be immortal, took Achilles to the River Styx, which gives power of invulnerability. She dipped Achilles into the river, holding him by his heel. Only his heel was left unprotected and vulnerable.. Achilles grew up to be a strong warrior who survived many battles. But one day, his heel got shot with a poisonous arrow, which shortly drove him to death. The term “Achilles’ heel” refers to one’s physical or mental weakness or vulnerable area. The mythology not only created the term “Achilles’ heel”, the tendon connecting the heel to the calf muscles is named the Achilles tendon.
Today, the allusion of Achilles’ heel is found in many literature and media, describing one’s weakness or flaw. For example, an article, Hillary Clinton’s new ad unsubtly fires at Donald Trump’s Achilles’ heel: Temperament depicts how Clinton’s new advertisement points out Trump’s weakness as a nominee for the presidential election. “Even among those who like Donald Trump, his temperament is a point of weakness” (Bump). A poll in regards whether the candidate have the right temperament and personality to serve as president in the article clearly shows that majority of republicans, democrats and independents in overall voted that Hillary Clinton has a better disposition.
