Decoding the Alchemyst’s Code: A Book Review on The Secrets of Nicholas Flamel: The Alchemyst by Michael Scott The book The Alchemyst is the first book of the series The Secrets of Nicholas Flamel which focuses on the story of Nicholas Flamel, a renowned alchemyst who, according to history, had passed away in 1418 but with the use of The Book of Abraham, managed to live for hundred years more. At present day, Nicholas and his also immortal wife Perenelle disguise themselves as bookkeepers; everything seems to be going smoothly for the couple until Dr. John Dee, a known necromancer and archenemy of the Flamels—steals the book and robs them of the chance of immortality. This book does not only let us read about the adventure of the Flamels but also of the twins Sophie and Josh Newman. According to Flamel, it was prophesized in the stolen Book of Abraham that the twins were the one to save the world and the doom that was to be unleased unto it. At first, the Twins were hesitant but after a few chapters, we read about them unlocking their ‘powers’ and learning to control their ‘aura’.
Reading this book was very interesting because of the diversity of the characters that were introduced in the first installation of this book series. For instance, we are introduced to Nicholas Flamel’s unique abilities as a potions master, …show more content…
The locations mentioned in the book varied and were able to test the characters’ reflexes and skills to avoid danger. My only gripe with this is that there was not much progress in the development of the characters as there is with switching from location to location in their quest to reclaim the Book of Abraham. I think that this first book was supposed to be action-filled, but I think that there was not enough interaction between the characters that contributed to the build up of suspense and character
