2.) The book, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, is an amazing book I will never forget. In the book, the author said that alchemy is all about pursuing our spiritual quest in the world as it was given to us; it’s the art of transmuting our reality into something sacred. With this in mind, my personal legend would be finishing (graduating) school. The first time I was able to act on this journey was when I started kindergarten as a little kid. That year was basically my “beginners luck” because it was the easiest year compared to high school. In the book, the alchemist tells Santiago, “You don’t have to understand the desert; all you have to do is contemplate a simple grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation.” With this in mind, I believe the reason the alchemist chose to befriend Santiago, instead of the Englishman, was because he learned a lot more about life on his journey than the Englishman. Throughout Santiago’s journey of finding his treasure and completing his personal legend, he learned all about the world. During his journey, he learned many new lessons that changed his perspective on life. However, the Englishman had his head in his books throughout the whole journey, barely learning anything besides what was in his books. Also, when the two characters come across the two dead hawks, it represents a symbol of nature. It shows how the universe and everything in it works to inspire and help people accomplish their personal legend. Another thing was when the alchemist explains to Santiago the secret of successfully turning metal into gold. This process compares to finding one’s personal legend because they both show how there is a secret to everything in life. To sum it up, this is why the alchemist chose to befriend Santiago, even though he knew the Englishman was the one looking from him to begin
