If someone told you a story about a shepherd pursuing his dreams, would you be interested? Well, “The Alchemist”, by Paulo Coelho discusses the story of a Spanish shepherd searching for his dream. The alchemist is an amazing story filled with surprises and jaw-dropping scenes. Santiago learned a handful of lessons throughout his journey. Santiago learns to speak the language of the world and to connect with the world’s soul. He also learns that for a person to find oneself, he or she must listen to his or her heart. The shepherd also learns that sometimes the goal or achievement that someone would look for is right in front of them. I personally learned a lot from Santiago’s lessons throughout his journey. To be specific, this is what the alchemist told the boy that “When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream” (114). What the alchemist means is that whenever a person has that strong desire and that highly anticipated motivation, nothing can stop that person from realizing and achieving his dream. This was one of the lessons that Santiago learned throughout his journey. This helped me realize that in order for me to achieve my goal which is succeeding in my academics at San Jose State University, I must have some motivation and desire. Nothing can stop me from achieving my goals with the kind of desire that I must have. For example, I have always dreamt of being more social and expanding relationships with others. Ever since I have read “The Alchemist”, I have had a different way of viewing what the world conspires to be and what I can achieve. I am currently on a 4 month run of being smoke free. There is also a part of me that believes this was all meant to be and this was all …show more content…
I honestly believe that whatever happened and whatever happens in a person’s life happens for a reason, and that reason is God’s will. As mentioned in “The Alchemist”, the merchant tells the shepherd: “Maktub” (59). The merchant also tells the shepherd that “You would have to have been born an Arab to understand… But in your language it would be something like ‘It is written’” (59). That is one thing that Santiago learned throughout his journey and it is something that made me realize as well. It affected my studies and my entire life as a college student. What happens in the future is written, as what happened in the past was written, and the same goes for the present. This will help me succeed at SJSU because of the fact that I don’t need to ask myself the repetitive and negative question which is “what if?”. I have learned that whatever happens is meant to be and planned out. Even if that is a bad experience that happens to a person. There is nothing that the person can do to change that and they just have to accept it. Even if a person fears to suffer, the actual suffering part is
