Santiago is an adventurous Andalusian shepherd. While sleeping under a sycamore tree that grows from a ruin of a church, he has a recurring dream about a child who tells him that he will find a hidden treasure if he travels to the Egyptian pyramids. Santiago met a gypsy woman who interprets his dream. She tells him to go to Egypt and when he finds the treasure, she must get one tenth of it. An old man named Melchizedek, who claims to be the King of Salem, seems to able to read his mind. He convinces Santiago that he must pursue his Personal Legend. He then gives Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, to interpret omens. When Santigao arrives in Tangier, a thief steals all of his money. He finds work in the shop of a crystal merchant to make money.

Santiago makes the shop extremely successful, making him a rich man in just a year. He continues to pursue his personal legend, which is to find the treasure at the pyramids. Santiago joins a caravan crossing the Sahara desert to Egypt. There, he meets an Englishman who wants to learn the secret of alchemy of turning any metal into gold. He taught Santiago many things and Santiago learns that a powerful, 200 years old alchemist lives at the oasis of Al-Fayoum on the way to the pyramids. When the caravan reaches the oasis to avoid violent tribal wars, Santiago meets an Arab girl named Fatima and instantly falls in love with her. He wanders in the desert and observes an omen that foretells an army attacking the neutral oasis. He warns and shares his vision with the tribal chieftains. They armed their men and the oasis did get invaded. Santiago is confronted by the alchemist and he offers to cross the desert with Santiago. He teaches Santiago about the importance of listening to his heart and pursuing his Personal Legend. A tribe of Arab soldiers captures them in the area of intense warfare. They hold them captive and later allow them to continue their
