The quote "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." In my opinion this quote is true because you do need experience to do or know something. Although reading can give you a lot of knowledge it’s not enough for you in the real world. To become a doctor you actually need experience but knowledge is just as important. I believe that this quote can be applied to “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” by Ben Carson with Cecil Murphey and “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, because in these books the author portrays the challenges and hardships the people faced which is their experience and the

He knew this wasn’t his personal legend but he was happy so he stayed. Then he met the alchemist who helped him get back on the path and in the end he found his treasure and learned do what you love but do not forget the task at hand which in his case was his personal legend. In both books “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” by Ben Carson with Cecil Murphey and “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho the authors write about the challenges and hardships that the people faced and overcame and the completion of their personal legend. The challenges that Ben Carson and Santiago faced were all part of their experience which eventually shaped their character and help them find their personal legend. So the quote is true but I would like to add on to it and say that “your character is also formed by the people around”. In Gifted Hands Bens mom was a big influence on him, she really shaped his character with all the support she has given him. In the alchemist Santiago had the king and the alchemist to help him stay on track to finding his personal
