Americans were sneaking in Texas because it is a slave state in Mexico. After a while, Mexico picked about 300 families to settle in Texas, but under certain qualifications. The Americans had to follow Mexican laws and convert to Catholicism. Mexico let each family have 640 acres. In 1830, 20,000 more Americans swarmed into Texas because more people heard about what it is like living there (www.gilderlehrman.org). But the new settlers did not follow the requirements, they raised cattle and farmed cotton. Some of the new settlers brought slaves , which is outlawed in Mexico. Because of these incidents, Mexico passed a law that banned Americans. After America tried to buy Texas, twice, Santa Anna took power in Texas and pushes the Americans out with force. The Americans fought the Alamo, a mission, in several different cities. After a long week of fighting, Americans finally retreated to the Alamo. The Mexicans surrounded the Americans for twelve days. The Alamo was built as a fortress style compound and mission. (www.american-historama.org) The building that survived the battles of the Alamo were used as houses for soldiers, but in 1876, they were all sadly abandoned. Texas bought the Alamo Chapel, but didn’t restore it or even take care of it. The Alamo Chapel was later sold as a grocery store. After that, The Daughters of Texas bought the Alamo Chapel with a little bit of complications through court, then in 1905, then the chapel started to be restored in 1905. The chapel was constructed with blocks of limestone, and was about 30 feet tall and 60 feet wide.
