Just Mercy is written by Bryan Stevenson and is about him defending poor black people from Alabama who are on death row, or about to be sentenced to death row. Walter McMillian is a black man who was found guilty for the murder of a white woman named Ronda Morrison. Ronda Morrison and Walter had a loving relationship, and the real murderer was Ralph Myers. Myers was coached by the sheriff to lie and say Walter did it. Myers told the court that Walter was the real killer and Walter was found guilty of murder even though there was clear evidence it couldn’t have been him. Just Mercy took place in the late 1980’s. It surprised me how racist people were back then because the 80’s was only thirty years ago. Thirty years is not a long time. What sparked my interest the most was how inmates were treated. While reading some of the Stevenson’s stories he wrote made me wonder, “How could the prison officers get away with such crimes?” Just Mercy is a nonfiction book and it has some very surprising stories in it. In the book, Trina Garnet, an African American, was sent to life in prison at the age of 16. The worst part about her sentence was that she had intellectual disabilities and was not awarded a fair trial, and the way she got treated in jail was inhumane and unfair. She was raped by an officer in jail. The officer didn’t have to go to trial. We need to change Alabama’s jail system for the safety of the inmates, and make it an opportunity for them to learn to become better people. At the same time, we should protect our officers inside the jail cell. In some cases, in Alabama, the officers have not been protected. Throughout the years of Alabama, the prisons have not improved enough. I just graduated from the University of Alabama Law School, and am now working for the Rose Law Firm. I plan to work with the people and the state of Alabama to make these changes
