In the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States, the Middle Eastern terrorist group known as Al Qaeda has gained tremendous power throughout many Middle Eastern countries through subsidiaries of their group such as ISIS, Al Shabab, AQIM, and Jabhat al-Nusra. Having acquired this power has allowed them to continue their reign of terror.

The extremist group that poses the greatest threat according to officials is Al Qaeda (Paragraph 5 of the Overview. Lines 1-2). Al Qaeda was responsible for the large-scale terrorist attack that occurred in the United States, which was the September 11th attacks. The country that Al Qaeda is located is in Yemen. However, Al Qaeda has a heavy influence in several Middle Eastern countries. (Intro paragraph 1 lines 9 and 10).

These four main networks are; Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Al-Shabab, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and Jabhat al-Nusra. All four of the affiliates have different agendas. Al Shabab intends to gain control of Somalia, while AQIM’s agenda is to overthrow the Algerian government and institute an Islamic state. Jabhat al-Nusra’s intention was to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Although the analysts may agree on the four different affiliates, they do not agree on the categorization (paragraph 16. Lines 1-3). The differing opinions of experts comes down to whether the group possesses the same ideals as Al Qaeda.
