Gunboat diplomacy is defined as: diplomatic relations involving the use or threat of military force, especially by a powerful nation against a weaker one (Dictionary.com). The United States is one of the greatest military powers this world has ever seen. It is common knowledge that seventy-one percent of this planet’s surface is covered by water. This means essentially that controlling the seas means controlling most of the planet, and the United States has greatly taken advantage of that. All of the world’s greatest nation’s power in the past and present is directly related to the size of their navy. If you are to look at the British Empire, who at one point controlled a fifth of the world’s population, you would see how powerful they were because of their navy.
